Passing a school bus in the State of New Jersey is a very serious offense as noted by the penalties listed
below. You must stop at least 25 feet from a school bus and keep your car stationary until such time as all
children have entered the bus, alighted and reached the side of the highway and the bus is no longer
exhibiting its flashing red lights. Even where the roadway is divided and a cement divider is between the
roads you must reduce the speed of your vehicle to not more than 10 miles per hour and shall not resume
normal speed until your vehicle has passed the bus and all children who may have alighted from said bus

- A Fine of not less than $100.00 and
- Imprisonment for not more than 15 days or community service for 15 days as the court shall deem
appropriate or both - Possible suspension of your drivers license in the discretion of the Direction of the Division of Motor
Vehicles.
